At some point in our lives, we are afraid to fail.
This is known as atychiphobia and it can really prevent us from reaching our fullest potential. Many times we allow ourselves to remain in our comfort zone because that’s where it feel safest to us.
I mean, why venture into the unknown when it’s uncertain we will succeed?
I totally understand.
For me, I look at the fear of failure in a different way. Yes it’s pretty scary to try something new especially not knowning where it will take you. But what if you don’t? Do you want to spend the rest of your life living with the regret you didn’t accomplish what you always wanted?
That you didn’t live a life of true meaning and purpose? Missed out on some truly amazing opportunities?
Maybe it’s the fear of pursuing your passion or life long dream.
Whatever it is that’s keeping you back from achieving your true potential, I’m here to tell you there is hope. Below are 6 ways in which you can defeat your fear of failure to live a meaningful life.
Believe in Yourself
It is very important to believe in yourself and your dream. After all, who would if you don’t? There are many reasons why this can be hard for us. Maybe you had a traumatic experience growing up where you failed at something you were really excited about. Or like me, you probably had excessive anxiety and low self esteem which prevented you from doing your best.
Growing up, I never had the self confidence when doing presentations in class and as a result, it has caused me to doubt myself a lot. So I completely understand where you’re coming from. As I entered into adulthood, I have tried not to let self doubt take over my life completely.
It’s not going to be an easy road and you will fall many times. What has helped me in my journey is listening to TED talks and motivational speeches on Youtube. That can really give you a confidence boost and you will find the journey to believing in yourself getting easier everyday.
Have a Positive Mindset
The law of attraction is very powerful. It states if we focus on the positives or the negatives in our lives, we will become either the former or latter.
In other words, what we put out into the universe is what we shall get back. By having a positive mindset, we not only would be building our self confidence, but we will also begin the process of reducing self doubt and self sabotage from our minds.
Self sabotage is where a person creates problems that gets in the way of what they are trying to accomplish. Whether it’s a physical problem or negative self talk, this can be very harmful and a major component in the your fear of failure.
As the famous quote says, “Your mind is a powerful thing. When you fill it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change”. Start adopting a positive mindset with everything you do and you will soon see how beneficial it will be to every aspect of your life.
Have a Strong Support System
This is very important. Without a strong support system behind you cheering you on, you will continue to have a negative mindset towards achieving your goals and dreams.
Having family, friends, co workers or anyone who will support you would encourage you to keep pushing in the right direction and this would eventually remove the fear in your mind of venturing into the unknown. Because if you fail, the right support system will be there to pick you up when you fall and push you to continue reaching for the skies.
As the saying goes, “The sky is the limit”.
Don’t Strive to be a Perfectionist
I’ve been caught very guilty of this. Aiming to be a perfectionist. Believe it or not, perfectionism is tied into being afraid of failure. Let me paint a scenario.
You love music. Your dream is to become an artist. For many months, you’ve been contemplating on doing cover videos and posting on Youtube so you can get your feedback from others. But you realize you may not have a high quality camera and you want your first upload to be perfect. You spend months and months thinking of a concept for your first video, aiming for it to be perfect because in your eyes, perfect = success.
After a while, you give up totally and decide not to post your work on Youtube because it isn’t “perfect”. What I’ve learnt over the years is there’s no such thing as perfectionism because we are not perfect as humans. We were made in God’s image and likeness but we also came into a world of sin.
Also there’s this thing called life and as much as we may aim to accomplish something perfect, life steps in at the most uncanny times and gives us obstacles which we have to work around.
My advice is to put your work into the universe anyway. You will never know unless you try.
As Theodore Roosevelt said in one of his famous quotes, “Believe you can and you’re already halfway there”. Follow his advice. Visualize yourself collecting your diploma or giving a speech and getting a standing ovation at the end. Picture that feeling of accomplishment and happiness you would feel in that exact moment.
By visualizing success, you are creating a positive mental outlook on your goals and dreams. The first step is to believe you can do it and the second step is to actually put in the work to get there. Visualizing success will give you an encouragement boost to work hard knowing the greater rewards at the end.
There is Hope
There are millions of people who choose to live a comfortable life because of their fear of failure. Don’t be one of them.
In order to defeat the fear of failure, you need to believe in yourself that you can accomplish any task you set your mind to. By having a strong support system and a positive mindset, you will be well on your way to visualizing success in any thing you choose to accomplish. Just remember, do not strive to become a perfectionist and do not allow self doubt to stop you.
Avoid negative self talk and do not let others bring you down. Let the discouragement of others be the motivation that keeps you going and prove to them that you will not let the fear of failure stop you.
